Creating a just and generous world.

Expensify.org empowers individuals and communities to eliminate injustice around the world by making giving and volunteering more convenient, meaningful, and collaborative.

The origin of Expensify.org

Though Expensify.org launched in January 2020, the idea of the charity was set into motion over 10 years ago by Expensify's founder and CEO, David Barrett. After selling his first company, David was struck by an idea to help feed the people experiencing homelessness he passed every day walking through San Francisco. He would use pre-loaded gift cards and technology to offer funds immediately for individuals to purchase food. While this idea didn’t initially take off, the concept led to the creation of the expense management app, Expensify, in 2008.

What does an expense management app and a charity have in common? Well, organizations and volunteers we partner with use our app for free to track volunteer expenses. With 20+ teammates we work closely with our partners to approve their expenses. We then share those expense reports with our donors so they know how their contribution was spent.

The Expensify.org giving model

The foundation of Expensify.org was built on applying our expertise in expense management to increase the transparency of how funds are used, the convenience of how donations are gathered, and — most importantly — the emotional connection between donors, volunteers, and recipients.
